Pickup trucks do not come in a one-size-fits-all style. If an automaker is going to make sure it caters to a wide variety of people from different walks of life, it had better provide a solid amount of different styles and sizes to customers. That is precisely the case with the GMC pickup truck lineup, which starts with the GMC Canyon. The Canyon may be the entry into the pickup truck lineup, but that does not mean it doesn’t still offer plenty of capabilities in areas where pickup truck drivers need them the most. Among the most important aspects of driving a pickup truck is being able to haul heavy loads, both in the bed and in trailers. How much weight can the 2019 GMC Canyon tow? Read ahead for the specifications.

Trailering and payload capacities by cab style

The 2019 GMC Canyon is offered with three different cab styles: Extended Cab (with a box length of 6 feet, 2 inches), Crew Cab (with a box length of 5 feet, 2 inches), and another Crew Cab with a 6-foot, 2-inch box length. Each cab style has the option of two-wheel drive (2WD) or four-wheel drive (4WD). Furthermore, three different engines are available: a 2.5-liter DOHC Inline 4, a 3.6-liter V-6, and a 2.8-liter Turbo Diesel. The Turbo Diesel is not available on the Extended Cab model.

So, let’s get down to it now. The 2WD version of the Extended Cab model has a maximum payload of 1,599 pounds, while the 4WD model has a maximum payload capacity of 1,559 pounds. The 2WD and 4WD versions of the Extended Cab model equipped with either the 2.5-liter engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds, while the 3.6-liter engine increases that to 7,000 pounds.

The Crew Cab with the shorter box offers a maximum payload of 1,605 pounds with 2WD and 1,528 pounds with 4WD. The 2WD version with the 2.5-liter engine delivers 3,500 pounds of maximum towing capacity. The 3.6-liter engine increases that to 7,000 pounds, and the Turbo Diesel bumps it up even more to 7,700 pounds. Those numbers remain the same for the 4WD model, except for the Turbo Diesel engine, which allows for a maximum towing capacity of 7,600 pounds.

Finally, the Crew Cab with the longer box length offers a maximum payload of 1,555 pounds with the 2WD model and 1,459 pounds in the 4WD model. The 2WD versions equipped with the 2.5-liter engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds. The 3.6-liter engine offers a maximum towing capacity of 7,000 pounds, and the Turbo Diesel bumps that to 7,700 pounds. Once again, those numbers remain the same in the 4WD model, except for the Turbo Diesel engine, which again offers a maximum towing capacity of 7,600 pounds inside the 4WD truck.
